Seville
- Andalucia's Capital City. by Heather McMillan
Think Andalucia, think Seville!
To many people, Seville encompasses all those things that make Andalucia
special. The exuberant, colourful dresses worn at the April Fair, the whitewashed,
characterful streets of the Barrio Santa Cruz, the heady scent of orange
blossom and the emotional sounds of flamenco; all these tipify Seville
and are also the very essence of Andalucia.
Seville,
the wonderful capital of Southern Spain by Ruth Polak
Seville, is a marvelous
city of many moods and dimensions. Take a trip there and you are sure to
have a memorable time...

A Flamboyant Spanish City by William Gallas
Spain is a country known for

Seville is the capital of
Andalusia. It is a large city, the second largest in Spain and is brimming

European destinations and a prominent one on the Spanish tourist map.
If nature is what you are
looking to feast your eyes on, you can enjoy it in its entire splendor
at the Doñana Nature Reserve and the Sierra Norte Nature Reserve.
They are blessed with plenty of wildlife and flora and fauna of the highest

Being one of
the most historical Spanish cities, it has a lot of historical evidence
to offer. Foremost are the culturally rich districts such as Triana and
La Macarena. These were cities that the moors invaded during their conquests.
Here you can view the Moorish architecture and culture in all its glory.
Most of it can be seen in the Old Quarter.
Right in the centre of the
Old Quarter is the Cathedral of Seville. At first glance it may not seem
as a cathedral, but this is because it was originally built as a mosque.
It was constructed in the 12th century by the Almohads. Nowadays it is
considered to be the most magnificent and largest gothic cathedral worldwide.
The tallest tower in Spain
- La Giralda is attached to the cathedral. It was erected in 1914 and was
meant to be a minaret of the mosque in those days. Excavations have found
that the stones used at the foundations, originally belonged to roman structures. |

The naval museum is alongside
the river. It is more commonly known as del Oro or Golden Tower. It was
built between 1221 and 1222 and was used for defensive purposes in the
region from the Alcázar to the River.
The Alcázar - which
many consider the highlight of Seville was the Royal Mudéjar Palace.
It has lovely sprawling gardens. It also houses the The Casa de Pilatos
or House of Pilate which is a 16th century mansion. It is very highly regarded
and appreciated in architectural circles as it has a beautiful blend of
Mudéjar, Gothic and Renaissance styles. Another "cannot miss" is
the glorious Plaza de España, situated close to the Barrio Santa
Cruz. |
Seville is world
famous for its two huge fiestas, both of which occur in spring. First you
have the religious festival, taking place during Easter week and the other
is the Feria de Abríl (April Fair). Both will surely leave you with
unforgettable and highly cherished memories. |
