Fascinating attractions of Bordeaux, Aquitaine, FranceAs popular seaside venue, Aquitaine’s coast offers fantastic beaches, great water sports and lots to do in the French region. The cuisine is delicious, washed down with a good wine, before heading to sun and sand for a relaxed holiday. Bordeaux is no exception. This port city is well known as being the major wine industry capital of the world.
Bordeaux offers interesting history and several unusual sites to visit, while enjoying a holiday through Alternative Aquitaine. Visit some of these sites below. Victor Hugo Market and the Falling CarFirst time visitors to the Victor Hugo Market in Bordeaux can be forgiven for being shocked, as a 1960s Jaguar Mark 2 appears to be hanging precipitously from the parking garage, over the Courts Victor Hugo. The parking garage accommodates visitors to the market and also the sports arena nearby and was constructed in the 1960s by Jean Dauriac and Pierre Laffitte.
When renovations were carried out in the 1990s, Jean-François Dosso, an artist and architect, came up with the idea to place the British racing green Jaguar, hanging out from the building. This was originally intended as a temporary art installation, but somehow it caught on and can still be seen today, not only advertising the building’s purposes, but also leaving a little whimsy to the otherwise boring parking garage. Miroir d'eau – reflecting pool in Bordeaux
While Miroir d’eau is known as the largest reflecting pool in the world, it is interesting to note that the water is only 2 cm in depth. While Washington, DC is renowned for its reflecting pools, Bordeaux’s version definitely beats them, as the Miroir d’eau covers more than 37,000 square feet. Located in the Place de la Bourse, the reflecting pool covers a massive square in front of the buildings, and due to its shallow depth, people can walk over it. In
summer, a mechanism hidden beneath the pool can be turned on, to change
the pool to a fog of mist. For visitors who don’t mind getting a little
damp, this is a pleasant place to cool off in the summer heat.
Cinema Utopia, BordeauxThe 6th-century Church Saint of Simeon is located on the Place Camille-Jullian in Bordeaux. The former church has been transformed into a great art-house cinema, well known for its excellent selection of films. At the entrance to the lobby of the cinema, a café offers snacks all day, with tables stretching out onto the street outside. The café is set in the nave of the church, which retains its splendid architecture, while the cinema itself is a delight to visit.
One
of the films currently showing at the cinema is “Phantom Thread.” The film
is set in 1950s post-war London and tells the story of dressmaker Reynolds
Woodcock and his sister Cyril (played by Daniel Day-Lewis and Lesley Manville).
The pair is famous in British fashion and known for dressing movie stars,
royalty and heiresses. The story ventures into the romantic life of Woodcock
and how he remains single until he comes across a strong-willed woman named
Alma (played by Vicky Krieps) who becomes his lover. Such is the type of
film on offer at this fascinating and unusual cinema.
Enjoy your visit to the wonderful city of Bordeaux on your Aquitaine holiday and make a point to visit these unusual attractions.
