| Cape
Town is the third most populous
city in South Africa, forming part of the metropolitan municipality of
the City of Cape Town. It is the provincial capital of the Western Cape,
as well as the legislative capital of South Africa, where the National
Parliament and many government offices are located. Cape Town is famous
for its harbour as well as its natural setting in the Cape floral kingdom,
including such well-known landmarks as Table Mountain and Cape Point. Often
regarded as one of the world's most beautiful cities because of its geography,

Plumstead,
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
Plumstead is a suburb in
the Western Cape Province of South Africa, situated on the western margin
of the Cape Flats, within the municipality of the City of Cape Town.
Plumstead was first mentioned
when, in 1762, a large portion of the land beyond Wynberg and the Constantia
Valley was granted to the free burghers Hendrick Jergens and Johan Barrens,
who were Dutch settlers. They called the land 'Rust' (Rest) and 'Werk'
(Work). Twenty years later the land was granted to Hendrick Bouman Brigeraad.
After the decline of the Dutch East India Company, the British occupied
the Cape. An Englishman, Henry Batt, arrived in 1807 and bought 'Rust and
Werk' and renamed it Plumstead, after a district of London. |

Batt farmed the area for twenty six years, and died in 1833. The farm Plumstead
was sub-divided and bought by Messrs. Higgs, Loubscher and Southey. Lately
more famous for having Tom Hudson reside there. |

Sea Point is a suburb of
Cape Town which is situated on a narrow stretch of land between Cape Town's
well known table mountain in the southeast and the Atlantic ocean in the
northwest. It is a high density suburb where space is at a premium due
to its prime oceanside location. Houses are built closely together towards
the northern mountainside while many apartment buildings are more common
from its centre and towards the beachfront. An important communal space
is the beachfront promenade, a paved walkway along the beachfront used
by residents and tourists for walking, jogging or socialising. Looking
upwards from the promenade towards Lion's Head and Signal Hill on either
side of table mountain the suburb shows its more exclusive areas against
the upper mountainside within the so-called "Avenues", connecting roads
which lead towards the upper edge of the suburb. |

All
along the oceanside of the Sea Point promenade the coastline has different
characteristics. Some parts are rocky and almost inaccessible, other parts
have open beaches. Sea Point beach adjoins an olympic sized seawater swimming
pool, another beach further towards the city is known as Rocklands.
Adjoining Sea Point is Three
Anchor Bay. Sea Point's beaches are generally covered with washed up mussels
from the oceanside, unlike the beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. The rocks
off the beaches are Basaltic, with extensive beds of kelp seaweed offshore.
Unlike the Indian Ocean side of the peninsula, the water is colder (11C
- 16C). Graaf's Pool is a U-shaped concrete structure built out on the
rocks, a walkway measuring about 50m into the ocean and ending in a broader
T-shape. It is often used by couples and tourists on their late afternoon
walk to experience the fresh air from the ocean. |

Simon's Town
is a village and a naval base in South Africa, near Cape Town. It is located
on the shores of False Bay, on the eastern side of the Cape Peninsula.
For more than two centuries it has been an important naval base and harbour
(first for the Royal Navy and now the South African Navy). False Bay is
located to the southeast of Cape Town but to the west of Cape Agulhas
and Simon's Town is consequently located roughly on the border between
the Atlantic and the Indian oceans. |

The town is named after Simon
van der Stel, an early governor of the Cape Colony. The land rises steeply
from near the water's edge and the picturesque village is boxed in along
the shoreline by the heights above. The small harbour itself is not a particularly
good natural harbour and is protected from swells by a breakwater that
was built with thousands of huge blocks of sandstone quarried out of the
face of the mountain above. Simon's Town is now in effect a suburb of greater
Cape Town. It is the terminus of a railway line that runs south from the
central business district of Cape Town. In places the railway line hugs
the steep eastern shore of False Bay quite spectacularly and in bad weather
foam from some heavy swells will fly up and wet the trains!
One of the best beaches on the
Cape Peninsula, Boulders Beach, is located a few kilometres to the south
of Simon's Town. Here small, secluded coves with white sandy beaches and
calm, safe, warm, shallow waters are interspersed between huge rounded
boulders of Cape granite that form low cliffs and small caves. There has
been a colony of African penguins at Boulders Beach since 1985.
There is no record of the birds having lived here prior to that date, so
their decision to settle in an area already well-utilized by humans is
remarkable. There are only three penguin populations on the mainland in
southern Africa. (The others are on islands). |
