Be charmed by lovely Pollensa in Mallorca, Spain
Nestling in the north of the island of Mallorca, Pollensa (also known as Pollença) is an ancient and beautiful town, just a few kilometers from the Port of Pollensa on the coast. Its narrow, winding streets are lined with beautiful, golden-stoned homes leading to the main square with its cafés, bars and restaurants. While the town bears signs of ancient heritage, in the last century it became a colony of artists, musicians and writers who settled in after discovering the beauty of the area. Visitors have been drawn here ever since. Read on for a brief introduction into the beautiful town of Pollensa.
History and Culture in Pollensa
In the town itself, visitors can explore Pollensa’s Roman past, with its Roman bridge, “El Pont Roma” which is still in use today. The bridge crosses the Torrent de Sant Jordi, built by the Romans during their occupation to provide the town with water. As with the majority of Spain, the Arabs spent time here, building the town’s foundations, constructing irrigation systems to allow agriculture to flourish.
Just outside of town they can visit the Puig de Pollensa, where a monastery nestles on a small mountain. In the town itself, the Knights Templars built the Nostra Senyora de Angels, overlooking the square. The church was rebuilt in the 18th century in the baroque style. A visit to the Palace of the Templars is always worthwhile. Standing next to the Font des Galles, it is marked with a carving of a Knight on the door to what is now La Taverna del Temple bar in the main square.
Pollensa is accommodating
Pollensa and the nearby Port of Pollensa offers a wide range of accommodation options. Choose a hotel on the beach near the port, or a charming boutique hotel in town. A variety of quaint bed & breakfasts are available in Pollensa or in the rural areas surrounding the town.
For those who prefer to be more independent and live like a local, a range of beautiful Pollensa holiday rental villas is on offer. Alternatively, rent a cute apartment in the older part of town, or a beachfront penthouse with a sea view. Basically, the choice is yours!
Things to do
Spend time strolling the narrow streets of Pollensa, taking in the attractive buildings or discovering a coffee shop. Anyone who enjoys arts and crafts will be in paradise, with shops selling the best from the local artisans.
For those with the energy, climbing the Puig de Pollensa is a worthwhile experience that can be accomplished in an hour. Hikers will find shade from the oak trees on the way up and once at the top, visit the former monastery and enjoy the panoramic views from the top. The monastery, known as the Sancturi del Puig de Maria (pictured above) now offers modest accommodation in the former nuns’ cells, as well as a restaurant serving simple Mallorcan dishes.
Make sure you visit Pollensa on your next trip to Mallorca – either make a day trip from Palma, or spend a night or two in this charming town.
