4 Off-The-Beaten Track Safari Locations In Tanzania

Mt Kilimanjaro

Tanzania is rightly famous for the Serengeti and the Great Wildebeest Migration and for the Ngorongoro Crater. However, there are less known safari adventures to be had in Tanzania, which are equally as rewarding, but with not so many crowds of visitors. The following are three examples of off-the-beaten path safaris in Tanzania, some of which are fly-in only for added adventure.

1.  Tanzania and the South Central Region

Head to the Selous Game Reserve to spot vast numbers of the most iconic big game wildlife. These include the greatest population of buffalo, lion, elephant and hippo in Africa. However, Ruaha National Park is also a great spot to visit and is considered to be Tanzania’s best-kept secret. Fly in to Ruaha to stay at one of the lovely tented camps or riverside lodges, where you can enjoy luxury and great hospitality.
Herd of elephants in Tanzania

The park is bordered on the Great Ruaha River, where visitors can spot some of the biggest elephant herds and all the major predators, such as cheetah, leopard and lion. Also see the packs of wild dogs and spotted hyenas along the way on an enjoyable Tanzania safari..

2. Mahale Mountains National Park

This destination can only be reached by air or boat and lies on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, the second largest lake in the world. Here a beautiful rainforest is home to many chimpanzees. This is the perfect spot to go chimpanzee trekking to see many chimps and their families
Chimpanzee

Lying in the Great Rift Valley, the lake is home to around 500 different fish species and is a beautiful place to stay, especially in Kigoma, on the shores of the lake. Here you can visit the Gombe Stream National Park and the fabulous Mahale Mountains National Park. Heading through the rainforest, you will see colorful butterflies, many species of birds, but also a large population of chimpanzees and other primates.

3.  Tarangire National Park

Tarangire National Park is known for its diverse landscape and for the many ancient baobab trees that dot the landscape. A river running through the park gives access to a huge variety of wildlife, including antelopes, buffaloes, giraffes, leopards and lions, as well as a large concentration of elephant families.

Relax in an observatory area, gazing at beautiful river views with wildlife taking the opportunity for a cooling drink, or head out for a game drive to see more of the park.

4. Lake Manyara National Park

Head across the Great Rift Valley to Lake Manyara National Park, with its stunning scenery and forests of acacia, mahogany and giant fig trees. Here you can spot a large number of blue monkeys and baboons, along with elephants, giraffes, impalas and buffaloes. You will also see the comical faces of the hippos, enjoying a dip in the lake.

A unique aspect of Lake Manyara National Park is the famous tree-climbing lions and a number of birds, including flamingos, the crested eagle and the ground hornbill. This is one of the best place for safari photography, to capture the perfect images to take home.
