Ho Chi Minh City (formerly
known as Saigon) is second the most important in Vietnam after Hanoi. While
Hanoi is much more reserved, with the feel of a provincial city, Ho Chi
Minh is a true metropolis where capitalism counts.
Pace of life is much quicker
than anywhere else in the country and the city is experiencing inevitable
developments. The city is bathed by many rivers, arroyos and canals, the
biggest river being the Saigon River. The Port of Saigon, established in
1862, is accessible to ships weighing up to 30,000 tons, a rare advantage
for an inland river port.
Brand new office buildings
and shiny skyscrapers sprout up every day; nevertheless the city manages
to keep some of its oriental charm. The cyclo driver still awaits customers
in the streets, temples filled with incense dominate the busy districts,
street vendors sing their traditional selling songs and fortune tellers
predict the future for the superstitious, just like they did for hundreds
of years.
Places of interest include
the Independence Palace, the Thien Hau Pagoda, Saigon's old post office,
the Jade Temple, the myriad of museums and the Cho Lon Chinese quarter
in District No.5. Cho Lon is a destination which is unable to miss when
traveling Ho Chi Minh City. Cho Lon means ''big market,'' and the best
place to begin your visit is at the overwhelming Binh Tay Market. Like
Chinese districts in San Francisco, New York, London and Bangkok, Cho Lon
is one of the oldest and most mysterious parts of Saigon. |

A visit to Cho Lon, Ho Chi
Minh City's Chinatown, can take an afternoon, if not an entire day. Although
it is likely to be hot and crowded, take your time here. The variety of
goods here is positively astounding and will give you uncanny glimpses
into modern Vietnamese life. You can save from 20% to 40% if you bargain.
Not far from Saigon are the
legendary Cu Chi Tunnels The tunnels are an incredible network of tiny
underground passages dug by the Viet Cong to combat the US. The fit can
squeeze underground with a guide and crawl into the amazing war rooms,
secret entrances and see vicious booby traps in the bomb-blasted woods.
There is a touristy side to it but it's an intriguing insight into one
the fiercest battles of the war. It must have been hell for both sides. |
Ho Chi Minh City is a year-round
destination and even the rainfalls of the rainy season (May to October)
are over in a couple of hours, giving way to sun, the city feeling refreshed.
