Cartagena Hotels / Self-Catering
on the Costa Calida, Murcia
From Villa Martin just outside
Torrevieja it takes around 40 minutes to drive to Cartagena city. The new
motorway is often empty and takes you directly there although the tolls
are quite expensive.
We usually park on the outskirts
of the city by Cartagena port and walk in past the oldest Submarine in
the world. The Peral Submarine is quite impressive to look at, built 124
years ago in Cadiz Spain, the first of its kind.
From the submarine we walk
along the cities old defence walls into the centre past lots of Spanish
boutiques, with great and unusual fashion accessories. This can while away
many hours, but quite often when we are shopped out, we head of lunch on
one the little narrow cobbled streets bustling with people where there
are many restaurants, and cafes.
I always order and highly
recommend the "menu de dia" or in English Menu of the day. For the price
of a main course on the normal menu you receive three courses of freshly
cooked fish, or meat with a salad to start and a local desert to finish
and it often includes a glass of wine in the price. Very good value, and
not too heavy if you are planning on a busy afternoon sightseeing or shopping! |

After lunch is it nice to
go for a stroll along the central tree lined walkway with fountains and
lots of children's climbing frames and swings. It is a beautiful area of
the city an additional bonus is this esplanade leads to the El Corte Ingles.
El Corte Ingles is Spain's equivalent to Selfridges. Not to be missed on
any shopping trip in Cartagena!
There are also many sights
to be seen in Cartagena including Castillo de San Felipe an ancient fort
built in the 1600s. There are also a couple of museums, such as the Naval
Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art.
When you feet are tired mid
way through the afternoon popping into a small Spanish café often
gives you a second wind. Some serve chocolate delicacies, such as chocolate
fondue, hot chocolate and chocolate waffles. If almost every girls dream
after a hard days' sightseeing and shopping!
For a real treat on the way
home we have been known to stop for supper along the Mar Menor in a little
seaside resort called "Santiago de la Ribera". It is well sign posted and
situated quite close to Murcia airport. Santiago de la Ribera is a hidden
gem on the Costa Calida. Miguel Pescaderia (fish restaurant) does not look
very special at first glance. You walk through the fish mongers to the
Restaurant. There are huge windows that open up for a feel of alfresco
dining. There are also several tables 'on' the beach during the summer
months. There are fantastic views of the sea and the little Spanish wooden
fishing boats swaying by moon light. The service is excellent, and the
fish is very fresh and cooked subtly to perfection. We have been there
several times, with friends, family, and children, and also for a romantic
evening.

Murcia Hotels / Self-Catering on
the Costa Calida, Murcia
Vacationing in Murcia, Spain
may be just the type of vacation you have been looking for. With fun activities
such as sightseeing, visiting museums, gambling at the casino, and walking
through old churches and cathedrals, you will not have a moment to be bored
during your vacation. Spain is a beautiful country that is filled with
history and charm. Called the 'University City' because of the number of
students who attend its university, Murcia can offer you a vacation filled
with learning and leisure.
While visiting Murcia, you
should visit some of their museums. If you are interested in art, the Almudi
Art Palace houses some of the best known art from the region. The building
used to hold corn given to the churches for the tithe, but in the 1980's
it was renovated to house city archives and artwork.

After visiting the art museum,
you can visit the Museo de la Cuidad. This museum tells the story of the
region through artwork, documents, artifacts, and other items. It sits
on an old orchard that was used during the Moorish period. You will be
able to learn more about cultures that inhabited the region many centuries
ago while tracing artifacts to present day. This is a must for any first
time travelers to Murcia.
After visiting the museums,
you may want to visit some of the local churches in the region. There are
many ornate, large churches and many smaller churches. Famous cathedrals
include the Cathedral of Murcia. You can enter the cathedral from one of
two entrances, the Puerta de Perdon, which is the front entrance, or the
Portada de las Cadenas, which is located on the side. You can climb to
the top of the tower to see breathtaking views of the city and the landscape. |
In between sightseeing, you
may want to have a little fun gambling, dancing, or spending time with
other tourists and locals. Visit the Gran Casino Murcia and play the slot
machines and other games the casino has to offer. You can also meet up
with those in your tour group, or make new friends.
If you are in the mood to
relax, visit the Spa La Manga Club for a massage, facial, and other spa
treatments. You can spend some time in the pool and recharge for another
day of sightseeing. Many tourists try to break up their vacation by spending
time seeing the sights and relaxing when they can.

Murcia Hotels / Self-Catering on
the Costa Calida, Murcia
If you want to get away from
the crowds on the coast of the Costa Calida or southern Costa Blanca, a
picnic or just a nice walk in the "Parque Natural de Sierra Espuna" can't
be beaten. I have lived just south of Torrevieja (in Villamartin) for six
years and this is one of my favourite excursions, it takes about an hour
to drive there from the coast and is approximately twenty minutes from
Murcia. The drive into the park is breathtaking with fantastic views, as
the road rises steeply up from the coastal plain. With hairpin bends and
sheer drops, sometimes on either side of the road, it is not a drive for
the faint hearted.
I always take food and drink
with me as the only restaurant that I have found is always closed or packed.
There are a few purpose built picnic areas and some have barbeque facilities
and toilets. On my last picnic, in one of the main areas, we were the only
people there and were visited by a family of wild boar much to my grandson's
delight. He then spent the next half hour feeding the piglets from the
safety of the picnic table! I am told there are many other examples of
interesting birds and wildlife here including wildcats and eagles, although
I haven't seen any myself. There are marked walks and trails through the
pine woods so make sure you have some sensible shoes on. Due to the height
and the inevitable breeze the daytime temperatures here are not as stifling
as that on the coast, so it is a welcome respite. On bank holiday weekends
the parking can be difficult as hundreds of Spanish families visit for
family get-togethers and feasts. |

Although I would not dare
myself, cyclists and climbers make full use of the parks tracks and cliffs.
The easiest way to get there is to follow the motorway ( A - 7, E - 15)
southwest from Murcia to Alhama de Murcia and follow the signs. You will
see the mountain from miles away with its covering of pine forests and
you will be amazed you can drive up there. There are no fees or charges
to use the park so go and see it for your self and have a great day out
away from the crowds and the beach.
