The Northern Lights On Cheap Cruises by Emily

The Northern Lights might
astound us nowadays but in Scandinavia they downplayed the phenomena believe
them to simply be the sunlight reflecting off the large shoals of herrings
in the North Sea. All except for Finland who had a much better explanation
- they believed that in the northern area of Lapland there were foxes made
from fire who flung sparks into the air with their tails.
If you were to glimpse the
Northern Lights you'd instantly understand why they have inspired stories
and why civilisations have tried to explain them for centuries. Away from
the major towns and residential areas cruise ships move holidaymakers away
from the impending light pollution and are therefore the ideal vessel on
which to catch a glimpse of the aurora borealis.
Finding cheap cruises that
take you into Northern Scandinavia might be tricky but there are several
specialists in this region, including Fred Olsen and Hurtigruten. However,
what could be more apt than travelling on a ship called the Aurora? This
P&O Ocean Liner leaves from Southampton and travels to Stavanger and
the stunning fjords before making its way further north.
One of the most useful features
of the Aurora, certainly in the eyes of Northern Light spotters is the
bar called the Crow's Nest, which offers fantastic views out over the many
ports and oceans. This is ideal, once you arrive into Trondheim. Trondheim
is the first port where you have a reasonable chance of spotting the Northern
Lights. The Northern Lights are best seen between 10pm and 2am, just be
careful that you don't miss them by leaving the Masquerade nightclub too
late. |

Calling in at the area of
Ny Alesund, you'll get to spend time with scientists who spend their time
in the region researching the aurora borealis. The town has a Northern
Light observatory station and if you haven't already spotted the enigmatic
lights you can pick up tips from the scientists.

The best place to spot the
Northern Lights is in the town of Tromso. Time
your cruise holidays for January and you'll be in time for Nordlysfestivalen,
a festival dedicated to the aurora. Here you'll find music and great atmosphere
as the locals celebrate the sun finally setting (Tromso is so far up north
that it lies in complete darkness for weeks on end). Tromso is your final
chance for glimpsing the lights and if you haven't yet spotted them you'll
find a host of excursions to make your task easier - Northern Lights safaris
and cruises can all be booked from your ship.
Heed this advice when the
time comes to leave and don't wave the aurora goodbye, some local Sami's
still believe that if you do so you'll be abducted by the gods. So it seems
that millennia on, the Northern Lights are still inspiring legends. |
