If you are planning a visit
to Malaysia and Johor Bahru is one of your destination, then you should
make the historical Masjid Sultan Abu Bakar as one of your tour stops.
Masjid Sultan Abu Bakar or
Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque is one of the main landmarks in Johor heartland.
Not only it is the most beautiful mosque in Johor, but it is one of the
oldest and most beautiful mosques in Malaysia. It is located at Jalan Gertak
Merah, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. It opens 24/7 not only for Muslims
congregational prayers but also for tourists.
Nested on top of a hill,
the compounds of Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque offers a wonderful elevated view
of Straits of Johor and Singapore. Its unique architecture is influenced
by Moorish architectural design, with four leaning towers surrounding the
area, which is so popular during the early 20th century. Some even said
it is also Victorian influenced, the minarets look like British watch towers.
Regardless, its unique architecture and idyllic surroundings make it a
must visit for engineering enthusiasts and photographers. |
The development of the mosque
has said to be the mark of modernization of the state. The foundation stone
of the museum was laid by Sultan Abu Bakar, the Father of Modern Johor,
in 1892 but he never lived to see the museum completed as he passed away
three years later. It took eight years of constructions and was first used
on February 2, 1900. The mosque was built to accommodate 2000 worshipers
by a local engineer, Datuk Yahya Awaluddin.
Today, the mosque is expanding
its role. It is full with activities especially during Saturday and Sunday
for religious classes, Quran lessons, pre-marriage courses, counseling
sessions, wedding solemnizations (akad nikah) and so on.
You are welcome to visit
the mosque and even walk around its grounds, but visitors are asked to
dress modestly. Also, try to avoid visiting on Fridays as this it is busy
with worshipers on this day.
