Travel: Iguazu Falls and the Perito Moreno Glacier by Victoria
Cochrane
Argentina is home to many natural
tourist attractions. As such, the Iguazu Falls and the Perito Moreno Glacier
attract millions of visitors every year, making them two of the most popular
destinations in South America. Although located a considerable distance
apart, those enjoying an extended holiday in South America may be fortunate
enough to experience both.
Of
the two natural attractions, the Iguazu Falls is the more popular. Situated
on the border with Brazil on the north-eastern tip of Argentina, the Iguazu
Falls consists of more than 275 separate falls, stretching for nearly two
miles across Argentina and into Brazil.
Taller than Niagara Falls,
the Iguazu Falls are considered to be one of the greatest natural wonders
of South America and are a protected UNESCO World Heritage Trust.
Here you can experience broad
walks and nature trails, whilst there are many tour guides available to
offer Jeep and boat rides to help you view the wonders of the area.
A trip to the Iguazu Falls
also provides the opportunity to discover some of the nearby South American
cities. Foz do Iguacu is a major city that acts as a gateway to both Paraguay
and Argentina from Brazil. Another city that is worth a visit is Puerto
Iguazu; a small city that mainly attracts tourists visiting the falls.
In addition, close by in Paraguay lies Ciudad Del Este; only a short distance
from the falls, it is a city which offers plenty for those who wish to
experience some shopping.
Towards
the south of the country lies the Perito Moreno Glacier. Located in the
Los Glaciares National Park, the glacier is one of the most popular attractions
in the Patagonian region. At 250 square kilometres in size, the glacier
is considerably large even for the Patagonian region. In fact, the ice
field contains the world's third largest reserve of freshwater.
Easily accessible thanks
to its location within the National Park; the Perito Moreno Glacier is
probably best visited with the assistance of a tour guide. While the guidebooks
provide a thorough overview of the attraction, its sheer size can make
getting to see all of the best sights in one go quite difficult.
The Iguazu Falls and the
Perito Moreno Glacier are two of the most exciting attractions to visit
within Argentina and South America. A wide range of flights to Perito Moreno
Glacier and the Iguazu Falls make it possible to visit the two destinations
on the same trip; although considering their distance apart and the plethora
of attractions to explore, an extended holiday may be recommended.
